I know many of you have just been on pins and needles, wondering when the day will come that you hear more about the Kangaroo Mince. How was it? Was it weird? Was it gross? How did you eat it? Well, that day is today. We did it.
A few nights ago, I pulled it out to thaw in the fridge, forcing myself to face it. I kind of forgot about it and then rediscovered it 2 or 3 days later and realized that I better just do it or it would be spoiled by the next night. I decided on making a Kangaroo Shepherd's Pie {I know, it makes it sound like I made it out of the Kangaroo Shepherd}. My plan was two-fold: 1. It would be a dish that would do it's best cover up some of the taste. 2. Another added bonus was that it had so much other stuff in it, which could make it seem like I ate a lot if indeed I just ate the potatoes and green beans and moved the meat around with my fork.
The best part was when I said to Laine, "Guess what we're having for dinner tonight... Kangaroo!" She just laughed her head off and said, "Mom, you're funny!" "No, I'm serious, we really are ha...oh nevermind"
I was totally prepared for it to be really gross and even more prepared for it to be gamey. It actually really wasn't! It tasted so much more like beef than I was expecting. In fact, though my gag reflex was in hyper-drive, I know in my mind that it tasted really good. If you could get past the fact that you aren't eating something "normal" then it actually would taste excellent. I however really couldn't. I ate my helping that night {helping, what am I, on a ranch?} and then had another for lunch the next day and called it good.
Would I do it again? I guess I have to at least once more. I freakin' bought a 1 kg package and I didn't make that size of Shepherd's Pie. I just browned the rest and froze it. But would I buy it again after that? I think it would be a funny joke to play on visitors actually, so probably yes, yes I will! I've said too much...
So I posted the recipe up on Hot Garlic. The bio is pretty much the same as here, but the recipe turned out really pretty good. Let me know what you think!

Gross! I could NEVER do it. I can't get over in my mind things I am eating. If I came as a guest and had it in something and thought it was beef, I would be totally fine. You are seriously adventurous. The question is did Ben eat it and how did he like it?

For some reason I couldn't log onto my blogger therefore you have the anonymous
Wow good for you for trying it. It looks tasty, but to tell you the truth you are more brave than me, I don't think I would have been able to try it.
Isn't that funny how our minds work? I recently had to calm my mind to eat a piece of octopus on my pizza. Back in the day my grandma ate "canned meat" as a girl. After the label laws came out she learned it was rattlesnake meat. She never ate it again, even though she loved it before!
I'm sure it tasted better than the "rodents of unusual size" members would feed us in Argenina! I would definitely give it a try if you made it for me.
Looks good, but I dont know if I am as brave as you...you did not say how the rest of the family liked it..I am sure Gabe chowed down on it~ How did Laine and Ben like it.
Okay Nat, so the BIG party I had at my house was BUNCO! But you know in Utah that is a big hush hush. So stupid to me, it has nothing to do with church. I do it with mostly my family (cousins and sisters) and with some of my really good friends. I love it!
Ha ha! Yuck! Please don't let me be the unsuspecting visitor! I am glad you did it though, its about time!
Wow!! I cant believe you ate it, I am proud!! I am just glad that you didnt say it tastes like chicken, everyone says that for all weird meat.
I wish we lived closer too! We would have such a good time!! I loved hanging out with you at Utah State we were always up for a good time.
I am excited for you and the adventure you are taking on in Australia. That is so cool!! You were always such a go with the flow girl and it looks like you have made it all over the world. I am so jealous!! :)
Thanks for the compliments on everything I am doing. We are excited for the next step. I will keep you posted!! So good to hear from you and I am so glad to be able to keep in touch! love ya!
Mind over matter? I couldn't do it! BTW...I am making this dish (minus the kangaroo) this week. And I made the Macaronni, red sauce with cheese yesterday..for dinner might I add, and it was great! My question...what is "tasty" cheese? I know it sounds lame, but walked up and down the cheese section looking for "tasty". did I miss something in a previous post?? :)
oh sick that makes me want to barf. i can barely stomach the texture of ground beef. i am a wimp. but that is just gross.
but atleast it looks delicious in the picture. i know i would be gagging.
